MoveON is a European Commission funded project (contract IST–2005–034753) that is researching innovative ways for safe motorcycle rider interaction. The application domain of the project covers police motorcycle units.

The riders will be able to control existing devices such as their Tetra trunk radio by multiple modalities (e.g. speech, buttons and knobs, touch screens), and also acquire new ways to send and receive information (e.g. vibration-based devices, led-based heads up display), in order to augment their operational potential and optimise the effectiveness of their mission.

Towards these objectives, a prototype has been built for MoveON, featuring:

  • a custom made “smart” helmet,
  • an enhanced vest that embeds the system CPU and part of the electronic devices and
  • a tactile input device for the handlebar

Distraction of user-system interaction is dynamically assessed by a model of the human cognitive load. That way, the system selection of the channel that will carry information to the user at any time is optimised so as to generate the minimum risk possible in terms of driving distraction. Another interesting result is that of robust speech recognition, optimised with speech-enhancement algorithms, after having produced a speech database that is now available to other researchers. Finally, the results of a Computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD) analysis are innovative, since experience used for car development was applied for motorcycle helmet aeroacoustics by simulating real wind tunnel tests.

Despite most products currently in the market, MoveON is targeting human driver safety first, while catering for information delivery and additional services to the officer. In information-intensive domains as this of Police operations, we believe that MoveON will offer useful results that could be the base for added value products and services.
